Metcalfe Street Dental - Dental Crowns - Different shades for teeth

The primary function of a dental crown is to cover and protect ("cap") a tooth that has been significantly damaged by trauma or decay. In instances where the tooth (or teeth) is missing, an implant supported crown can replace the tooth and the root structure. Traditionally, crowns were made of gold. Today a durable, enamel-like ceramic material is used instead. The color of this material can be perfectly matched with the color of the adjacent teeth which makes the restoration look completely natural. One disadvantage of a traditional dental crown that needs to be considered is that it requires relatively extensive "preparation" (trimming down) of the natural tooth structure. This modification is permanent which means that the tooth will need to be covered and protected by a crown forever.
